Is There a Subsurface Water Ocean On Titan?

It most likely is an exception.

The idea of a subsurface ocean on Titan is nothing new and surfaces in the geophysics/geoscience literature every so often. For example, when Voyager I passed by the moon, it detected an abundance of only 3% (mole fraction) of CH4, which is sufficiently low to preclude the stable coexistence of liquid CH4 on the surface. Lunine, et al. ("Ethane ocean on Titan", Science, 222, 1229-1230, 1983) suggested that Titan's atmospheric CH4 may have broken down by a catalyzed photochemical reaction to C2H6, with the C2H6 stemming from a subsurface ocean; the resulting deep ocean would consist of a 3:1 mixture of C2H6 and CH4. (To explain, the dissociation steps of C2H6 involve loss of hydrogen by escape, with the postulated set reactions: 2CH4 -> C2H6 + H2 and 2CH4 -> C2H6 + 2H. The intermediate molecule C2H2 plays the role of catalysis and shielding of C2H6 from photolysis. Furthermore, CH4 would break down at a rate of 1.5*10^10cm^-2/s and H/H2 would leave the atmosphere at 5.5*10^9 and 7*10^9cm^-2/s, which is consistent with Hanel, et al.'s analysis ("Infrared observations of the Saturnian system from Voyager I", Science, 212, 192-200, 1981). As such, it is reasonable to conclude that the result is a production of an CH4-rich ocean of 1km depth and a 100-200km thick layer of solid C2H2 on Titan's ocean floor).

For additional analyses, see: F. M. Flasar, "Oceans on Titan?", Science, 221, 55-57, 1983; O. B. Toon, et al., "Methane rain on Titan", Icarus, 75, 255-284, 1988; N. 'Magic Mike' star Tatum strips off his body hair

NBC

During a Thursday night visit to "Late Night," Channing Tatum revealed the toughest part of his "Magic Mike" prep.

By Ree Hines

"Magic Mike" star Channing Tatum recently visited TODAY to show off some of his big-screen stripper moves, but during a Thursday night appearance on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," the actor revealed he had to strip off more than his clothes for the movie.

Part of the prep involved parting with his body hair, a process Tatum didn't appreciate.

He told Fallon, "I got waxed, and that was ? uh ?"

"Fun?" the host asked.

"Nope."

While it wasn't fun, it was funny, as the clip provided proved.

Got to love the Lamaze breathing efforts Tatum employed to get through the pain.

Of course, the wax action wasn?t his only laugh-getter. Later on the show, Tatum donned his best girl garb and joined Fallon for a round of Teen Nick-style "Ew!"

And that still wasn't all. The actor even wowed the crowd with a shocking reveal. Remember Ricky Martin's 2000 hit "She Bangs"? Tatum made a blink-and-you'd-miss-it appearance in the video. See for yourself:

what does your exercise routine/diet look like? - Health, Fitness, and ...

Let's see, it's been crap, as I've been all busy with my family and my house is a mess and all kinds of stuff like that. But generally...

Ice skating from 12-1:20, usually some coffee/energy drink before skating and that's it. Sometimes if I'm lucky I'll have some eggs.

At night sometime, I'll lift weights, usually I'll do snatches, pretty much obsessed with snatches, though I suck at them and have poor technique. Then either squats or deadlifts, used to do a lot of clean and jerks. I squat Olympic style now, use less weight that way, though. I feel it's more helpful for skating, especially if I start doing sit spins and whatnot. Let's see, I do overhead presses, standing strict presses. Hard to get the weight up on those, it's so frustrating, I can seemingly always get my squat or deadlift up by like 20lbs a month easy, and then my overhead press using the same routine (of basically me f***ing around doing whatever I feel like that day) has gone up like...10 in 8 months? Let's see, I try to do pistols, too, but my balance sucks for pistols, but it's something I eventually need to learn to do for skating purposes. Occasionally, not as much as I used to (I say not as much as I used to for everything, because everything is a mess right now in my house, literally and figuratively) I did a lot of plyo jumps, box jumps, one leg jumps, etc. I also used to do punching bag work (I did that when I first started out, before weights) and lost interest/didn't make time for it anymore. OH! Last but not least, I do lots of slideboard. Usually I go on it without weights to warm up, then I go on it for 3-5 minutes at a time with 15s, occasionally 20s in each hand, so it turns into basically a skating farmers walk. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MY_4pjozF1w That's a slideboard.

As far as my diet. Lame. Diet, sleep, and stress affect me the most of all things in my life, and they all go interchangeably. I'm kinda constantly trying to tweak it to be better. At the advice of some posters on here, I've been cutting out carbs for the most part, and feel much better. I found out rye bread and me agree, but majority wheat bread and me don't. So this week, as a pretty "optimal" diet, it was 5 strips of bacon, 2 eggs, a patty of breakfast sausage, and then pan toast made with bacon grease. That was "brunch" I guess, and then for second meal, similar smaller meal like that. Then dinner, a 1/4-1/3 head of cabbage, and 3-4 links of Italian pork sausage cooked in water with spices and a bit of spaghetti sauce (with dat dere soybean oil in it, yay...) This seems like a good diet for me, as the fat content means I don't get hungry very quick. That, and it gives me more cholesterol to make hormones. My problem eating a lot of carbs is I eat a ton of food. I'm the type of person that can eat a large pizza and then still eat more like an hour later. So so far, this seems like a decent diet, but as it's said "everything works...for a while." Also did it a bit on the advice of the crazy (but cool) man Frank Yang, he said when cutting he just needed to drop carbs.

My big problem dietwise comes from the fact I live with my family (only mother and sisters), and don't have a job. So my mom buys all a bunch of processed food and then just tells me "You can get $20 worth of stuff for the week" so since I don't eat the processed food, I can't really eat very "balanced" like that. I don't have much for supps, either, cheap crappy multivitamins, fish oil pills, and b vitamin pills, and that's about it. I've had whey protein like twice, meanwhile my family buys like $30-40 worth of bottled water a month. Occasionally I take ginseng, too, again, cheapest crappiest grade pills of it from the dollar store. So yes, I could go on forever about how insane my family's nutritional and general money thought process is, but yes.

Google I/O Day 2: Offline Editable Google Docs, Chrome for iOS, Super Computing Tool

Google I/O Day 2 Keynote

Yesterday at its I/O developer conference, Google ?unveiled a number of new products, including its first-ever Nexus branded tablet, but it kept a few announcements in reserve for day two. On Thursday morning, the company showed off a number of new tools and services, including iOS versions of its popular Chrome browser, offline editing capability for Google Docs and Google Compute Engine, a cloud-based super computer system for developers.

Google SVP Vic Gondotra took the stage at around 10:06 a.m., wearing a pair of light blue Project Glass goggles. He immediately thanked the crowd for a great first day and an even better first night party, where attendees enabled the new Google+ party mode and uploaded over 13,000 images of the event.?

Chrome and Cloud Applications

He then introduced Sundar Pichai, Google SVP of Chrome and Apps. Pichai started by recapping some of Google?s latest Chrome and Cloud releasees, including Chrome for Android and Google Drive. He showed a chart documenting the growth of the Internet, which now has 2 billion uses. He said that more users worldwide will be getting online via mobile and that?s the biggest growth area.

He then talked about Chrome browser, saying that the 3 year old application now has 310 million users, up from 160 million last year. He spoke about the speed of Chrome, saying that the ability to search from the Omnibox saves users worldwide 30 years of time every single day.

He then invited Chrome VP Brian Rakowski up on stage to talk about Chrome?s ability to work across different devices. ?I use about 8 different computers on a regular basis,? he said. Rakowski then showed how Chrome synced between his laptop, another computer, his phone and his tablet. After logging off one computer, he logged into a new computer and showed how it even opened the tabs he had open on the previous system. A phone he logged into not only had his surfing history but also allowed him to hit the back button and go back to the page he had visited before.

He also unveiled the new iPhone and iPad versions of Chrome, which launch today. On the iPad version he was even able to reorder tabs by dragging them.

Gmail and Google Drive

Pinchai then came back on stage and talked about businesses and institutions that have ?gone Google? by using Google apps, including 66 of the top 100 universities and 45 states. He then showed a video about ?going Google? with business people using Google features like Hangouts and docs.

He then invited Clay Bavor, Director of Product Management for Google apps up to talk about Google Drive. he first announced that Drive is, as of today, available on iOS and Chrome OS. ?

On the iPad, Bavor demoed Drive?s new optical character recognition ability by searching for text that only appeared in a scanned receipt he had in his drive. He was also able to find a photo of pyramids by just searching ?pyramids? on his box.?He then showed how easy it is to share Google documents with others using the iOS app.

Bavor then demoed Google Drive for Chrome OS, showing how it is the Chromebook?s file system.?

Bavor then announced that, as of today, Google docs allows editing of text documents offline. He then disconnected his Ethernet, made some changes to a doc and showed how the changes appeared in the document after he reconnected. Offline Google documents is available as of today, with spreadsheet and presentation support coming soon.

He talked about the Google Drive SDK, announcing version two of the kit today.

Pinchai came back on stage to talk about Chrome OS, reminding us that last year the company launched its first Chromebook at Google I/O.

He said that, with the latest update to Chrome OS, the platform is now three times faster, has an app-centric interface and is called the ?always updated? PC because it gets updates automatically. He then announced that Chromebooks will now be available at Best Buy.

Google Compute Engine

He then invited SVP of Infrastructure ?Urs Holzle on stage to talk about Google?s data centers, saying that the company had built one of the world?s largest collections of data centers and was looking for ways to share that computing capacity with users and developrs. He said that, in 2008, the company launched its App Engine service for developers to take advantage of Google?s infrastructure. He said that, in Japan, a company used App Engine to power the voting for a popular song contest with no slow downs.

?He then announced Google Compute Engine, a new virtualization service that gives you Linux virtual machines any company can deploy. He gave an example of a science group that needed to run a task that took 10 minutes on their own servers, but only took a few seconds when deployed across 10,000 cores, using Compute Engine virtual clusters.

He also said Compute Engine delivers a great value, up to 50 percent more computing power per dollar than competitors. Compute Engine is now open in limited preview, he said. He then talked about the number of cores Google has available for processing and showed a counter with 771,886 cores that have been available to the Genome project since the beginning of the presentation. He then ran the same biology computation on 600,000 cores and it appeared even faster.

Pinchai then came back on stage and showed a visualization of how the web platform has evolved, a graphical time that went from the beginnings of HTML to today. He said the web is getting richer at a faster and faster rate.?

Web App Development

He then spoke about APIs and how they lead to innovation from developers who take them and run with them right away. He then showed off a game called Bullet Storm that allows you to play a first person shooter right in the Chrome browser as an example of the kinds of innovation tha tare taking place.?Pinchai said that Chrome developers will be able to make their apps available offline and break out of the Chrome window and run full screen.?

?He then invited Joanne Fillion and Aubrey Anderson from Cirque De Soleil on stage to show how they are developing for the web. She said that the company wanted to create a rich experience that goes beyond text and images. Anderson then showed off Cirque?s web app, which using standard HTML 5 and CSS, enables you to navigate an avatar through a beautiful virtual world, filled with 3D images.

?Pinchai then showed a video about the history and ?journey of Chrome,? from its origins three years ago. He then announced that he?s giving the audience members a Samsung Chrome box to test out everything that?s new with the browser and its OS.

Project Glass Again

Google then showed Sergey Brin on stage and we watched as he had his sky divers re-enact yesterday?s ?Project Glass sky diving, biking and repelling routine. Though he provided some additional commentary, we didn?t learn anything knew about the device or its capabilities.

Nora Ephron Didn't Feel Limited By Romantic Comedies

'I'm not complaining about any box that I'm in, because I can write whatever I want,' late writer/director tells MTV News in 2009.

No matter how it happens, when or where, it is always sad to hear of the passing of a celebrated, talented and respected public figure like Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, director and playwright Nora Ephron, who died of pneumonia at age 71 on Tuesday (June 26).

Ephron is best known for writing and/or directing some of Hollywood's most famous and successful romantic comedies like "When Harry Met Sally ... ," "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." Her final film as writer and director was 2009's "Julie & Julia," and during the promotion for that film, which starred Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, Ephron revealed to MTV News that although she was happy to be known for her romantic comedies, she also dabbled in a few politically charged subjects that had yet to be made into feature films.

"You should see my closet, it's full of political scripts," Ephron revealed, adding that while she'd love to see one of her many political scripts turned into a film, she wasn't holding out hope that Hollywood would let her take a turn from romantic comedies to political dramedies.

"Forget it," Ephron said of wanting to direct one of her political scripts. "I mean yes, but the [movies] you get made are not necessarily all the things you write."

When asked if she felt at all limited by being most well-known for her expertise in the rom-com genre, Ephron said she felt nothing but gratitude for how much her successful romantic comedies have done in providing her with the freedom to explore other unrelated subjects.

"I'm not complaining about any box that I'm in, because I can write whatever I want," Ephron said with sincerity. "Fortunately, I'm not just in the movie business, so I don't feel that the only way I can express myself is by the movies I make."

Share your condolences for Ephron's family and friends in the comments below.

Google-built machine learns to find cats on the Internet

14 hrs.

An artificial brain that Googlers built with 16,000 computer processors and a nifty algorithm has taught itself to recognize images of cats posted on the Internet.

While cats provide web surfers endless hours of giggles, the feat of the so-called neural network is a serious step forward in the realm of machine learning, the New York Times reports.?

The network is among the largest of its type ever built, thanks in part to falling costs and abundance of computers available for research.?

The Googlers fed their artificial brain 10 million images that were randomly selected from YouTube videos. Given a chance to see a random slice of what we put on the Internet, the machine followed our lead and learned to find cats.

?We never told it during the training, ?This is a cat,?? Google fellow Jeff Dean told the New York Times. ?It basically invented the concept of cat.?

The results show that ?it is possible to train a face detector without having to label images as containing a face or not,? the team notes?in a paper on the research posted on arXiv.org and presented this week at a conference in Scotland.

As we build ever bigger and more sophisticated artificial brains, they could help improve image search, speech recognition and machine language translation ??services that Google provides.

DIY Home Improvement at the Tip of Your Busy Fingers

Do it yourself projects should be doable, easy and ultimately useful. The following are some practical DIY tasks that you can try if you have free time at home.

Wiring a plug

Wiring a plug only requires basic know-how to carry out. First off, why would it be necessary to wire a plug? Sometimes, appliances' plugs become brittle, and break. It is dangerous to use broken plugs. Broken plugs can result in electrocution and in some rare instances, death.

In some cases, the wires inside the plug becomes disconnected. The first thing to do is to unplug the device to be repaired from the power source. With a screw driver, remove the cover of the plug and proceed to clear the terminals of any dirt.

This applies to new plugs. The only difference would be the insides of new plugs are clean. Proceed to separate the three distinct wires. The neutral wire, the earth wire and the live wire. All three are important, don't leave anything behind.

Attach the three distinct wires to the proper terminals inside the plug. Most plugs are uniformly built, so you won't have any trouble carrying this step out.

The brown wire, which is the live wire should go to the portion of the plug marked "L". The neutral wire, which is often coated with blue plastic should go to the "N" terminal. The third wire, the earth wire goes to the topmost region of the plug.

The copper wires should be wound around the proper terminals, or they should at least pass through. Some plugs require wounding while others do not.

Be careful with the fine strands of copper wire. Any loose strands should be fixed. Remember, loose strands can cause fire from shorts once you plug in the appliance.

Fixing a leaking faucet

You do not need a plumber to fix a leaking faucet. Often, leaking faucets can easily be remedied with the right tools. The first step to fixing a leaking faucet would be to turn off the water valve.

Leaky faucets are often due to brittle or broken rubber washers. These rubber washers are simple enough to be installed by anyone. Unscrew the top of the faucet after the water supply has been turned off.

Remove the broken washer and inspect the area. Clean the top portion of the washer of any kind of dirt. Molds should be removed with a clean sponge.

Place the washer and proceed to re-install the handle of the faucet. If all goes well, you would be able to screw the handle quickly. If the washer's size is right, the leaks would no longer appear. Turn off the water supply once again and test. A clean stream of water should appear.

In case this approach does not work, there is a possibility that there might be cracks or fissures on the faucet itself. Turn off the water supply once again, and inspect the faucet for minute cracks.

If there are minute cracks, purchase generic sealants. The sealants do not have to be expensive. Sealants like Epoxy Steel can be used.

(AP) ? New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees is confident that he and the Saints will agree on a long-term contract.

With the start of training camp about a month off, the two sides still have "a ways to go" to close the gap, the 2010 Super Bowl MVP said Tuesday.

Nonetheless, he said, "I'm confident, and always have been, that we'll get a long-term deal accomplished."

Brees acknowledged that the NFL's bounty investigation into the Saints has slowed down negotiations.

"This has been a stressful offseason in a lot of ways. There's been a lot of distractions for everybody," he said. "I'm not using that as an excuse other than just stating it as fact. That has delayed things quite a bit at times."

And when it comes to that bounty probe, Brees is adamant that the league has not proved money ever changed hands in a pay-to-injure scheme.

"How can everybody think that when there's been no proof that's been put forth thus far?" he said. "There's been an investigation; there's been a lot of stuff put in the media as to what was going on. But is there any proof to back that up? No, there's not. Not yet."

Brees was in New York on Tuesday to discuss a program that provides free concussion testing for more than 3,300 middle and high schools and youth sports organizations. He was joined on a panel by retired New York Rangers goalie Mike Richter, former New York Giants linebacker Carl Banks and ex-U.S. women's soccer team goalkeeper Briana Scurry.

Scurry's career was ended by a concussion more than two years ago, and she still suffers symptoms such as short-term memory loss, she said. Against that backdrop are the allegations that Saints defensive players intended to injure their opponents.

But Brees described the NFL's evidence so far as "hearsay" and "hypotheticals," not the definitive proof needed.

"If there is, then it needs to come forward," he said. "If it is what they say it is, then punishments will be levied and deservedly so. But if there's not, then we need to vindicate the guys that were obviously wrongly accused."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello responded in an email to The Associated Press that "the evidence is overwhelming."

"The investigation was thorough and includes statements from multiple sources with firsthand knowledge about the details of the program, corroborating documentation and other evidence," Aiello said. "The enforcement of the bounty rule is important to protect players that are put at risk by this kind of scheme. Certainly, Drew Brees would not want to be the target in a bounty scheme and that is why we must eliminate bounties from football."

Even if Brees signs a contract in time and doesn't miss any of training camp, the Saints will be short-handed after the penalties handed out by the NFL in the bounty case. Coach Sean Payton and linebacker Jonathan Vilma have been suspended the entire season. Assistant coach Joe Vitt, the interim replacement for Payton, is banned for six games, while defensive end Will Smith is docked four. General manager Mickey Loomis will miss eight games.

Former Saints defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove, now with Green Bay, was suspended eight games and linebacker Scott Fujita, now with Cleveland, got three games.

"They had a conclusion that they wanted to reach that this was going on," Brees said of the NFL. "So a predetermined conclusion: We're going to gear the investigation and everything toward that conclusion as opposed to let's just gather the facts."

The league accused the Saints of running a bounty system from 2009-11 under former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who has been suspended indefinitely by Commissioner Roger Goodell and issued an apology for his role in the scandal.

Brees questioned the testimony coaches gave to the NFL.

"A lot those coaches were living in fear of their careers if they did not cooperate," he said.

The Saints placed their one-year franchise tag on Brees, barring him from negotiating with other teams. Brees has skipped voluntary practices and minicamp while holding out for a long-term deal.

"I feel like there's been progress made over the last few weeks," he said. "But there's still a ways to go. I'm hopeful that it will happen sooner than later."

In this day and age almost everyone has already heard about Internet Marketing and advertising but you are going to see that there a lot of different myths which are floating around about this kind of business. One thing you have to remember however, is that these are only myths and in most cases they are an inaccurate view of Internet Marketing and advertising. Just so you understand what the reality is in relation to these myths we are going to be talking about a number of them on this page and telling you what the truth is. Turbulence Training

The whole ?Get Rich Quick? theory that seems to be floating around on the internet today about internet businesses, is something that is unquestionably one of the biggest myths right now. While one out of one million individuals may wind up starting an online business and getting rich quickly from it, this is a thing that isn?t normal or typical at all. Another reason many people believe this is simply because of all the different programs online that actually promise men and women that they are going to get rich quickly, but you should realize that these are just scams. Although Internet Advertising can end up being profitable you need to realize that getting rich quick isn?t something which you ought to be expecting if you enter this business. Satellite Direct

One more thing you have probably heard about Internet Marketing is that it is super easy to make money with this, but this is additionally something that is just not true. This is something which will require you to invest loads of hard work and loads of time if you genuinely want to realize success with this sort of venture, after all it is a business you are building. For individuals who compare an online business to a a real world business you are going to see that starting an online business will be easier than that, but it will still require loads of work. Burn The Fat Feed The Muscle

Something else you will most likely heard is that anybody can in fact wind up becoming successful on the web, but the reality is some folks are just not built for finding success online. Because this kind of business takes time, energy and dedication, you are going to see that there are a vast amount of folks throughout the planet who do not possess these qualities in order to find success. Something else I ought to mention is if you?re a lazy person trying to find the easy way to make cash this is something which is also going to prevent you from being successful.

One of the reasons a lot of people actually enter the Internet Marketing and advertising field is because they believe it is something that has no costs involved, but again this is also a myth. When you think about it I should point out that there are specific strategies of Internet Advertising that are free, but only utilizing these free methods aren?t going to provide you with the success you?re searching for.

Finding success on the net is not something which every person will be able to do, and it is going to require that you set aside a certain amount of time every day to devote to this business.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 $99 on-contract deal expands to Best Buy, Gamestop

Microsoft's Xbox 360 $99 oncontract deal expands to Best Buy, Gamestop

The Xbox 360 pilot program's breaking out of its Microsoft Store-only confines and heading to more ubiquitous electronics retailers Best Buy and GameStop starting today. If you'll remember, Redmond intro'd this subsidized plan last month, giving prospective buyers within reach of one of its 16 participating locations the ability to purchase a 4GB version of the console for $99 with a two-year commitment. In exchange for those contract chains, gamers forking over the $15 monthly fee not only get the privilege of owning the console at a discounted, upfront cost, but also Gold level membership to Xbox Live. We'd caution you to think twice and do some hard math before you hand over the plastic, though. Tempting as that low-price barrier to entry is -- in total, a $460 value -- you might be better off grabbing this console outright at $420 or less.

Sydney Harbor: Trash Found From More Than 200 Years Ago

From Mother Nature Network's Russell McLendon:

Sydney Harbor is one of the world's most picturesque seaports, renowned for both its natural beauty and iconic architecture. Yet after two centuries as the front porch of a major metropolis, it also hides an ugly secret below the surface: Garbage now blankets the seabed around Sydney, some of it nearly as old as the city itself.

All this trash causes a variety of local problems, environmentalists say, such as leaching toxic chemicals into seawater or tempting marine animals to eat tiny bits of plastic. And it may feed a much broader environmental threat, too, since some of the debris washes out to sea and could ultimately join the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

But thanks to a coalition of local divers and environmentalists, Sydney Harbor's garbage problem is undergoing a rare ? albeit slow ? change of fortune. As the BBC and Yahoo News report, Sydney-area divers have begun volunteering their time and talents to manually remove trash from the harbor floor, tackling a massive problem that has festered behind the scenes for nearly two centuries.

"The stuff on the bottom has been accumulating for 200 years, and it's only now we're really trying to pull it out in any sort of quantity," local diver Dave Thomas tells Australia's Seven News. "It's been out of sight and out of mind."

The effort is led by two Sydney-based conservation groups: Eco Divers, which conducts marine research and rehab missions via scuba diving, and the Two Hands Project, which rallies volunteers for beach cleanups and other environmental ventures. As Thomas tells Seven News, this kind of work comes naturally to people who spend a lot of time in the ocean. "As a diver you see this stuff, and if it was on land you would be disgusted," he says, "and you would do something about it."

Loose garbage remains a problem in urban areas worldwide, but coastal cities face unique challenges: Their own trash can hide offshore, either lurking in place or washing into ocean gyres, and they can also receive transoceanic trash from other cities, such as Japan's tsunami debris now reaching U.S. shores. Sydney's waste woes are especially severe, both for the local environment and for the Pacific at large, since ocean currents can carry debris to New Zealand and beyond, potentially feeding garbage patches in the North Pacific. The local government hasn't ignored the issue, though ? it employs a harbor cleanup team, for example, which began boosting its productivity in the 1990s by using prison inmates to help it collect trash.

But the prison-labor program was nixed in late 2010, and as the Sydney Morning Herald reported earlier this year, trash removal from the harbor has fallen since then ? even as heavy rains washed more debris out to sea. State cleanup crews collected just 2,284 cubic meters (80,658 cubic feet) of waste in Sydney Harbor during the last financial year, the paper reported, down 18 percent from the year before. This was partly due to other factors, namely the temporary loss of a key cleanup vessel, but losing so much labor has likely also played a role.

"One can draw the conclusion that there would be more litter in the harbor," Peter McLean, the New South Wales director of Keep Australia Beautiful, told the Herald in January. "I hate to see programs like this not continue in some form. It would certainly be very detrimental." Yet despite such setbacks, the NSW government maintains its stated goal of having Australia's lowest per capita litter count by 2016.

Eco Divers' and Two Hands' cleanup efforts could help with that, but it won't be easy. As the BBC reports, some of Sydney's marine debris is big and unwieldy, such as old bicycles and bathtubs, and even smaller objects like plastic bags, bottles and fishing lures are labor-intensive to remove by hand. And while it's hard enough to collect two centuries' worth of trash from the bottom of a busy harbor, more than 900 metric tons of garbage also washes back onto local beaches every year, much of it becoming trapped on rocky shores, Seven News reports. Sydney cleanup crews cover some 12,000 acres of waterways and 170 miles of shoreline, according to the Herald.

It is a daunting task, but as Two Hands' Dean Cropp tells the BBC, any progress is worth the trouble. "Unless someone cleans it up, it could be there for years," he says. "It could be there for hundreds of years ? doing damage the whole time."

For a closer look at Sydney Harbor's litter problem, see this video from Seven News:

Harper, Jones headed to London in 100M hurdles

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Dawn Harper won the 100-meter hurdles in the U.S. track trials Saturday for the chance to defend her Olympic gold medal in the London Games.

Harper finished in 12.73 seconds. She'll be accompanied to London by runner-up Kellie Wells and third-place Lolo Jones. Wells finished in 12.77, and Jones in 12.86.

At the Beijing Olympics, Harper ran a personal best 12.54 seconds to beat favorite Jones, who tripped on the second-to-last hurdle and finished seventh.

Disappointed after her heat finish a day earlier, Jones knelt on the track at Hayward Field after the final with a broad smile on her face.

The PocketGamer.biz week that was: Microsoft's Surface wows with Windows, Apple expands the App Store, and Nintendo unveils brand new (same old) handheld

The past 7 days in bite-sized portions

Though much rumoured in the days leading up to its unveiling, you shouldn't underestimate the surprise that greeted Microsoft's Surface when it was revealed to the world.

Windows 8 tablets were already on the cards, but one made by Microsoft itself ? whether a genuine attempt to take on iPad, or as is more likely, a message to manufacturers as to just what the OS is capable of ? seemed unlikely.

The?Redmond giant wasn't the only company to announce new hardware this week, however.

Nintendo also lifted the lid on the 3DS XL. In case you missed it, it's a 3DS, but bigger, and ? for reasons unknown - doesn't come equipped with a second circle pad. An odd choice, yes, but even more bizarre is the fact that European units will ship without an AC adaptor.

Such nonsense is nothing new, however.

The GBA's screen was a murky black hole that trapped all light. The original DS was a little dim too, while also constituting a bulky assault on design aesthetics. The 3DS shipped with a lunatic price-tag and lacked battery stamina.

These are the kind of shenanigans fans have long put up with in order to play Nintendo software on the go. Before we get too frustrated by that fact, however, let's move on to our bite-sized overview of the last seven days' worth of news.

Platform wars

  • ABI research shows Apple and Samsung take $90 of every $100 of global smartphone profits.
  • CEO David Helgason is on a mission to "democratise game development" with the launch of Unity 4.
  • Cuts at Nokia mean its Meltemi OS for low-cost 'rich feature phones' has been abandoned.
  • Tizen app developers can now apply for developer hardware units through the Linux Foundation.
  • Windows Phone developer support has grown by 521 percent year-on-year, according to a report from Flurry.
  • LG, Philips, and Sharp join forces to create?multi-platform SDK for smart TV apps, with a beta expected in October.
  • Amazon announces plans to roll out its Appstore for Android across Europe this summer.?
  • Nintendo unveils the 3DS XL ? a new version of its portable console which will boast a 4.88-inch top screen, but still no second circle pad.
  • Apple further expands the reach of its App Store, rolling out its digital storefront in 32 new countries. The App Store is now available in 155 countries worldwide.
Funding and acquisitions
  • GREE acquires a 49.2 percent stake in newly formed Japanese dev GeePlus.
  • Chinese web giant Tencent acquires a strategic minority stake in Unreal Engine developer Epic Games.?
  • Kiip has announced the winners of its $100,000 build fund for indies, with 20 studios receiving funding, services, and mentors.
  • The real world rewards network is also rumoured to have raised $10 million for an equity stake in the company.
  • Mobile engagement platform Beintoo has raised $5 million in its series A funding round.
  • Russian publisher Game Insight launches a $3 million indie publishing initiative, and invites developers to directly submit publishing requests.
  • Polish developer Vivid Games raises $1 million from 31 private investors, and floats on Warsaw's NewConnect share market.
  • Swedish touchscreen developer FlatFrog closes a ?20 million funding round led by Intel Capital.
  • NaturalMotion raises $11 million from Benchmark Capital to fuel expansion into free-to-play...
  • ...But it's not all about the money ? says CEO Torsten Reil ? Benchmark Capital is the perfect partner for NaturalMotion.
  • Family Guy Online developer Roadhouse Interactive has acquired Facebook and iOS studio Embassy Interactive to accelerate its move into mobile.
  • Essex University students win ?10,000 in Virgin Media's 100 Day Game Project for their puzzler Superfluid.
Industry voices
  • A tiny entertainment cost-per-hour is the secret of apps' success, even if they are eating the global wireless spectrum, argues XMG's Ray Sharma.
  • Temple Run: Brave inspires PocketGamer.biz editor Jon Jordan to ponder the relationship between perceived quality, price, and app distribution.
  • There are more than two app stores ? and Thumbstar runs 140 of them. Pocket Gamer EIC Kristan Reed speaks to the company's CEO and CCO, Gareth and Martin Edmondson.
Monetisation
  • Google sets out to drive player activity and in-app purchasing with Collectibles Week ? seven days of limited-time items across 25 games.
  • Facebook is working on a location-based mobile advertising product as the company looks for ways to monetise its mobile users.
  • The Social Network is also allowing publishers to charge players using local currency ??rather than Facebook credits?? and allowing monthly subscriptions for the first time.
  • A new partnership with ad network InMobi allows Marmalade's dev community to easily implement in-app advertising.
  • Research from Arkadium shows that RPG and strategy game fans are among the biggest spenders in Facebook games, along with online shoppers and social butterflies.
Microsoft's new line-up
  • Microsoft unveils Surface ? a 10.6 inch Windows 8 tablet available in ARM and Intel variants...
  • ...But?the giant?didn't inform its OEM partners of its plans to launch a rival product, and they weren't thrilled to find out about it.
  • Still, PocketGamer.biz deputy editor Keith Andrew argues that having a flagship Windows 8 device will give other manufacturers a standard to measure up against. A good thing for Windows 8 on tablets.
  • Microsoft also unveiled Windows Phone 8 this week, explaining that the mobile OS shares a 'core' with Windows 8, and will support C/C++ development.
  • But current Windows Phone users won't be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8 ? a break in the ecosystem which will be painful but necessary, according to Keith Andrew.
