NASA's Curiosity rover has seven cameras mounted on its mast, including the two-camera, full-color Mastcam system; the four-camera, black-and-white Navcam system; and ChemCam, which monitors the effects of the rover's laser blasts. The 17 cameras on NASA's Curiosity rover are capable of sending back unprecedented, jaw-dropping, full-color views of Mars ? but don't expect to be wowed by the first images. In fact, they just might be literally the size of postage stamps, in black and white.

Millions of people will be watching NASA's coverage of Curiosity's landing at 10:31 p.m. PT Sunday (1:31 a.m. ET Monday), on displays ranging from palm-sized smartphone screens to the giant screen in New York's Times Square. If the landing is successful, the first thing we'll see is bunches of grown men and women acting like giddy teenagers, pointing at blips on their computer monitors. What we definitely won't see are the 2-megapixel, color images that Curiosity's best cameras are capable of capturing.

Instead, we might see 64-by-64-pixel, black-and-white thumbnails from the rover's hazard avoidance cameras, or Hazcams. If NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter has time to relay more data from Curiosity, they might be 256 pixels square. Or there might be no pictures at all, just because Odyssey wasn't able to acquire enough of a signal fast enough.

In that case, we'll have to wait for Odyssey's second orbital pass, at around 12:45 a.m. PT Sunday (3:45 a.m. ET Monday). The fisheye-view Hazcam images sent during that opportunity could be 512 pixels square or maybe even 1,024 pixels square.


Why we'll have to wait
There's a simple reason why we won't be seeing the big, beautiful pictures from the cameras built into Curiosity's mast: That mast, which rises 6.5 feet (2 meters) above the Martian surface when fully extended, won't be deployed until later in the week. First, the rover's eight Hazcams (four looking forward, four looking backward) will have to do a quick check of the surroundings.

A couple of gems could become available later Monday. For instance, there might be a picture from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, showing Curiosity and the rest of the $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory payload descending through the Red Planet's atmosphere. MRO was able to snap a picture of the Phoenix Mars Lander's descent in 2008, and if the orbiter captures a similar view this time around, that could be released around 9 a.m. PT (noon ET) Monday.

The first thumbnails from Curiosity's Mars Descent Imager could be released around 4 p.m. PT (7 p.m. ET) Monday. That camera, also known as MARDI, should have recorded a sequence of color frames looking down from the rover during its descent, and once they're all relayed back to Earth and put together, they'll make for a great movie.

By Wednesday, the rover could be sticking out its robotic arm to let the Mars Hand Lens Imager, or MAHLI, take a full-color picture of the ground surrounding Curiosity. The mast should be raised around this time as well. First, the navigation camera system, or Navcam, is due to send back some nice, quick black-and-white views. By Thursday, the full-color Mastcam system is expected to be sending back wide-angle and fixed-zoom images.

Star of the show
Mastcam promises to be the star of the show once the mission hits full stride: The system's right-eye camera has a telephoto lens, capable of reading the "ONE CENT" lettering on a penny on the ground beside the rover, or distinguishing between a basketball and a football at a distance of seven football fields (roughly 700 yards or meters). It's called "Mastcam 100" because of the camera lens' 100mm focal length.

The left-eye camera (Mastcam 34) has a wide-angle, 34mm lens that captures a scene three times wider. It can snap 15 images in about 25 minutes to create a full-color, 360-degree panorama. Both cameras can record high-definition video at 5 frames per second, and the pictures can be combined for 3-D views.

The seven cameras on Curiosity's mast include ChemCam, visible as a large lens at top right; the wide-angle and telephoto Mastcam cameras, visible as two rectangular eyes below ChemCam; and the four-camera Navcam system, visible as smaller round lenses to the left and right of the Mastcam pair.

These pictures show what the wide-angle and telephoto cameras of the Mastcam system could see at a distance of 10 meters (33 feet). The top image (Mastcam 34 equivalent) covers an area about 14 feet (4.3 meters) across and has a resolution of one-third of an inch (0.84 centimeter). The bottom image (Mastcam 100 equivalent) covers an area 61 inches (1.55 meters) across and has a resolution of one-eleventh of an inch (less than a quarter of a centimeter).

The panoramic cameras on NASA's Spirit and Opportunity rovers had to take multiple images using different filters to create color pictures, but the imaging chip used in each of Curiosity's Mastcam cameras is built to produce full-color views with one snap. "It's identical to what most consumer cameras have," said Justin Maki of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who's a co-investigator on the Mastcam team and the lead engineer for the Hazcam and Navcam systems.

The Navcam system has four cameras, which are set up to produce left-eye and right-eye views in black and white. (Each "eye" is doubled up for redundancy's sake.) The Curiosity team will rely on the Navcam views to plot the rover's course during the two-year mission. It takes just 10 minutes for Navcam to produce a 360-degree panorama.

"Rover missions are highly dependent on the images," Maki explained. "The entire mission is occurring within the images we receive. ... When we land, we actually start with that first panorama. We bootstrap ourselves starting with that first images, and then we drive into those images and do it again."

Rover can take self-portraits
The MAHLI ("Molly") camera serves as the equivalent of the hand lens typically used by geologists to take a close look at rocks. It's similar to but more capable than the Microscopic Imager used on Spirit and Opportunity. At closest range (about 0.8 inch, or 21 millimeters), MAHLI can achieve a resolution of 14 microns (less than a thousandth of an inch). Its images will be in full color, which is a step above the Microscopic Imager's black-and-white views. MAHLI can use LED lighting to illuminate its target. And it can be focused at different ranges to produce microscopic detail in depth.

Because MAHLI is mounted on Curiosity's robotic arm, which can be extended to a distance of 6.2 feet (1.9 meters) from the front of the rover's body, that camera can be raised to see over an obstacle that blocks Mastcam's view. It can also be turned around to take a nifty self-portrait of the rover.

The black-and-white ChemCam camera, situated at the top of Curiosity's mast, can be used to study soil and rocks from a distance, but it also serves a specialized purpose: to observe the sparks given off by the rover's rock-zapping laser. The light from those zaps will also be analyzed by three spectrometers inside the rover to determine a rock's chemical composition.

Curiosity may be more loaded up with imaging technology than the geekiest camera-toting tourist, but it's good to keep a sense of perspective here. This mission is not just about the technology. The point is get the best view available of terrain that rises more than 3 miles (5 kilometers) above the floor of Gale Crater, potentially recording billions of years of geological change. That's something that will make Curiosity's vistas unlike any seen before.

"The biggest difference is that we're landing next to a mountain, so the images are going to be spectacular even if they're in black and white," Maki told me. "The most exciting thing is where we're going."

The DNA-damaging, or genotoxic effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, according to the prevailing wisdom, are the #1 cause of cancer initiation and promotion. This is known as the "Mutational Theory" of cancer, and has been the dominant explanation for half a century.

Therefore, it is absolutely disconcerting that the standard of care in cancer treatment today is still the use of genotoxic agents versus substances that are able to selectively harm the "bad" cells, leaving the "good" ones intact; which is also known as "

," and is a property characteristic of natural anti-cancer compounds and whole plant extracts. Nowhere is this more clearly demonstrated than in the case of fruit-derived compounds, such as graviola, where research indicates that

(not so affectionately named the "red devil" for its lethal side effects) and is highly selective in which cells it kills.

Take the cancer drug tamoxifen, for example. It is classified by the World Health Organization and the American Cancer Society as a human carcinogen, and has been documented to cause over two dozen health-destroying side effects, and yet it is still being used as a first line treatment for certain types of breast cancer. Does that really make sense? Even if tamoxifen was effective (which increasingly it is not), does it really matter if it "cures" breast cancer only to cause endometrial or liver cancer (which is often far more deadly than breast cancer) as a direct result of the treatment? Tamoxifen and chemotherapy resistance is increasingly a problem. In the same way that certain pathogenic bacteria become resistant to antibiotics ? even becoming stronger after being challenged with them ? drug resistance and multi-drug resistance to chemoagents is the canary in the coal mine, indicating the entire paradigm, hinged as it is on patented, highly toxic chemicals, is rearing to collapse.


Radiation Therapy Known To Cause Cancer & Enhance Malignancy

Similarly, radiotherapy is known to induce secondary cancers, along with a wide range of serious adverse effects. A woman whose breast is irradiated is more likely to develop lung cancer, for instance. But its effects may actually be far worse on the primary cancer it is being used to treat...

When a breast tumor is exposed to radiation, the cells within that tumor are not uniform, but have great heterogeneity. Some of the cells are fast-replicating, whereas some are slow-replicating and benign. Some cells are older, technically senescent, and by their very existence are keeping neighboring cells within the tumor and with greater potential for malignancy from breaking out into invasive growth. There are also cancer stem cells, which are technically slower-replicating and therefore less likely to be destroyed by chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and yet which are responsible for re-seeding and fueling the growth of the tumor itself with a theoretical limitless resupply of daughter cells.

Radiotherapy has been shown to increase the survival and self-renewing capacity of these breast cancer initiating cells by up to 30-fold, which means that while a radiation treatment may initially regress a tumor's volume/mass, it may actually be selecting out the more radiation-resistant and aggressive subpopulation of tumor cells which ultimately lead to higher malignancy. This promotion of self-initiating cancer cells is also true for chemotherapy, of course.

Incidentally, the low-dose radiation used to diagnose breast cancers in x-ray mammography is likely causing far more cancers in women over time than it is said to prevent. If you read the actual peer-reviewed medical literature on the subject you may be surprised to find that the low-dose ionizing radiation is actually far more carcinogenic (3-4 fold higher) than the high-dose radiation it is often compared to in radiation risk assessments. In fact, one of the most well known breast cancer associated genes, namely, BRCA1/BRCA2, confers greater susceptibility to radiation induced breast cancer in those who have it. In other words, staying away from medical radiation, diagnostic or therapeutic, may be essential to avoid the cancer it is being used to both "prevent" and "treat."

Why Conventional Treatment Fails & Will Continue To Do So

The failure of chemotherapy can work in the same way. When you expose a diverse population of breast tumor cells to a highly toxic agent, a normal response is to become damaged to the point of dying. But cancer may not be a strict random mutation process, but an ancient survival program unmasked; that is, the cancer cell may be drawing from a far more ancient evolutionary and genetic "tool kit" which enables it to survive far harsher cellular environments, e.g. chemical exposure, low oxygen, higher availability of glucose/fructose, acidic pH, etc. and therefore the addition of highly toxic chemotherapy-type chemicals will selectively kill the weaker, and technically healthier (more benign) cells within a breast tumor, while creating the very conditions within which the malignant and more chemoresistant cancer cells may thrive. Multidrug-resistance genes and proteins are involved. When attacked by a chemical (xenobiotic) the cancer cell may "regress" and activate the genetic equipment that enables it to efficiently push out (efflux) the chemoagent being used, surviving, while its neighboring weaker (though technically more normal and healthier) cells die off.

Can you see, then, how radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be responsible for driving a cancer into greater malignancy, at the very moment that it is harming the rest of the body, compromising the immune system (damage to the bone marrow and direct harm to the immune cells)? The incurability of pancreatic cancer vis-?-vis chemotherapy and radiation, therefore, may reflect how the standard treatments themselves are driving the patient into premature death. When the average pancreatic cancer patient (using most chemo and radiation protocols) lives no more than 6 months, do we say that the cancer killed them, or the treatments?

Standard operating procedures is to write off the patients death as being "caused" by an "exceptionally aggressive" form of cancer, rather than to admit that the very treatments may have transformed a relatively slow growing tumor into a rapidly proliferating and invasive one. Think of it this way: if you were being blasted with chemicals and radiation, and you were seeing your neighbors dropping like flies, would you relocate?

Can you, therefore, blame a subpopulation of tumor cells, having survived chemotherapy and radiotherapy while it's neighboring cells did not, moving to another tissue ? say, bone, or brain ? in order to survive? Cancer, after all, is something our body does (and likely to survive) and not something that happens to it, as if the genes in our body just went off one day like a cancer time-bomb, fatalistically predetermined by the less than perfect genes we inherited from our predecessors.

Given the likelihood that the conventional cancer industry is often not only failing to improve the quality and length of the lives of those who it treats, but quite the opposite, reducing the quality and length of their lives, the time has come to look for safe, effective, affordable, inexpensive and accessible alternatives to patented chemicals and ionizing radiation in the prevention and treatment of cancer. And the solution may be as close to us as our kitchen spice racks:

Oil falls on faded stimulus hopes, euro zone worries

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil prices fell on Tuesday on expectations that potential central bank stimulus may not be enough to revive sputtering economic growth and as hopes dimmed that the U.S. Federal Reserve will act this week to boost growth.

Supportive data from the United States, including higher home prices, improved consumer confidence and a boost in Midwest business activity, was seen as lowering the chance of more stimulus from the Fed when its two-day policy meeting ends Wednesday.

"Oil prices are lower on the paradox of slightly better economic data in the form of the Chicago PMI and the consumer confidence reading," said John Kilduff, a partner at Again Capital LLC in New York.

"The slightly positive readings may keep the Fed from acting as fully as the markets have priced in. Also, the comments from various German leaders have taken away some the expectations for ECB action," Kilduff added.

While crude futures headed lower for a second straight session, Brent crude remained on pace to post a 7 percent rise in July and to snap a string of three monthly declines.

U.S. crude is set to post a monthly gain of more than 3 percent, ending a two-month streak of declines.

Brent September crude fell $1.40 to $104.80 a barrel by 12:39 p.m. EDT (1639 GMT), having swung from $104.52 to $106.52.

U.S. September crude slumped $1.95 to $87.83 a barrel, having dropped to $87.74 intraday.

Total crude trading volumes remained lackluster, with dealings for Brent and U.S. crude well below 30-day averages.

August U.S. gasoline and heating oil futures also felt pressure ahead of the front-month contracts' expiration on Tuesday.

Slowing growth in the United States, the world's top oil consumer, has fueled expectations of stimulus measures from the Federal Reserve, which starts a two-day policy meeting on Tuesday, although caution about the likelihood the Fed will act immediately was evident as the meeting neared.

A promise last week by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi that the ECB would do whatever it takes within the bank's mandate to protect the euro raised expectations of new policy measures to solve the debt crisis when the ECB meets on Thursday.

Germany's finance minister on Tuesday reiterated its view that there is no need to grant a banking license to the euro zone's new bailout fund. Such a move could enable the fund to buy large amounts of debt issued by troubled euro zone economies.

Oil received support early after a pledge by leaders in China, the world's biggest energy consumer, to increase fiscal and monetary support to the economy in the second half of the year.
