Lloyd?s approach to risk management is integral to assessing its capital needs and measuring the return on risk. Each managing agent at Lloyd?s is responsible for managing its own risks and those of the syndicates it oversees, while the corporation manages the risks facing the Market as a whole. Strong risk management disciplines are viewed as essential to enhancing business performance and safeguarding overall franchise value. To address the risks faced by individual businesses and the risks that each syndicate poses to the franchise, extensive reviews are undertaken upon registration along with ongoing performance management reviews.

Each syndicate sets its own risk appetite, develops a business plan, arranges its reinsurance protection and manages its exposures and claims. Through the Performance Management Directorate (previously, the Franchise Performance Directorate), the corporation regularly reviews syndicate performance in each of these areas to ensure that it is satisfied with the level of risk posed to the overall Market and its mutual assets.

Realistic Disaster Scenarios

Realistic Disaster Scenarios (RDS) output is used to evaluate catastrophe exposure and is an increasingly important component of the risk management framework. It is built into Lloyd?s underwriting guidelines and capital-setting regime and is helpful in identifying potential over-reliance on individual reinsurers. RDS output provides benchmark stress tests that validate the output of Lloyd?s catastrophe model, which was introduced in 2010. By aggregating losses from particular events, the overall risk exposure of the market can be assessed, which plays into the capitalization of the Market as a whole.

Lloyd?s reviews the specifications and parameters of each RDS on an annual basis. There have been only minor changes to the RDS since 2006 with the addition of the United Kingdom flood scenario in 2009 and adjustments to offshore energy elements of the Gulf of Mexico Windstorm scenario in 2011.

Work with germ-killing copper could save thousands of lives

ScienceDaily (Sep. 7, 2012) ? When Adam Estelle graduated from the University of Arizona's materials science and engineering program four years ago, he had no idea he would be involved in saving thousands of lives.

Like most graduates, he was just hoping to find a job -- preferably in Tucson, Ariz., because he wasn't interested in big-city life. What happened next was a job offer from the Copper Development Association in New York City.

Fast-forward four years, and Estelle says, "I love New York more and more every day. And the most rewarding thing for me is the ability to work on a project centered on a technology that will save lives. That's immensely rewarding."

The technology is based on copper alloys that kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. The metals can be fashioned into everything from IV poles to sinks to bed rails -- just about anything that is frequently touched in hospitals.

While these surfaces might look benign, they're covered with organisms that contribute to hospital-acquired infections, the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, killing more people than AIDS and breast cancer combined. That's 2 million infections annually, and 100,000 deaths -- one infection for every 20 people admitted to hospitals.

While disease-causing organisms can lurk on stainless steel surfaces for two weeks, according to a recent UA research study, 99.9 percent die within two hours on surfaces that contain at least 60 percent copper, Estelle says.

Estelle has been working with four other engineers at the Copper Development Association, a not-for-profit trade group, to develop a market for copper alloys in the health care industry. They also have been helping manufacturers gear up for producing copper alloy products.

Part of that effort has involved gaining EPA certification for the antimicrobial effects of copper so manufacturers can advertise the health benefits of these products.

The second part, which has been Estelle's major focus for the past two years, was to retrofit the Ronald McDonald House in Charleston, S.C., with copper alloy stair railings, door hardware, sinks, faucets, counter tops, kitchen tables, chair arms, and other surfaces that are frequently touched by patients, visitors and staff.

This has been a win-win for everyone, Estelle explained, creating a safer environment for families and children, while at the same time helping the first wave of manufacturers tool up and commercialize lines of copper products that can now be marketed to hospitals.

"One of our first commercial products is a beautiful seamless counter top and sink bowl manufactured by Elkay Commercial Products," Estelle said. "We installed about forty of these in the Ronald McDonald House." Elkay is among ten manufacturers now marketing antimicrobial copper alloy products to the health care industry.

Surfaces at the Ronald McDonald House were swabbed and tested for bacteria for ten weeks before the new copper alloy products were installed. "Follow-up tests on the items converted to copper showed they carried 94 percent fewer bacteria," Estelle said. "We are now trying to recreate the Charleston project at other Ronald McDonald Houses around the world to create a safer living and working environment for the children, families and staff."

Now, with the Ronald McDonald House pilot project completed and EPA approval secured, the next step is to convince hospitals to replace traditional surfaces that are not worn out with copper alloy ones. New policies from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that go into effect next year should help spur this changeover. Treatment for hospital-acquired infections costs between $35 billion and $45 billion each year in the U.S., and Medicare and Medicaid will no long reimburse hospitals for that treatment if the infections are judged to have been preventable and a hospital mistake.

But even without the new rules, the changeover makes economic sense, Estelle explained. Under today's reimbursement system, individual hospitals spend $5 million on average each year to treat infections. "Even on the low end, it's $30,000 per infection," he said. Clinical trials at three hospitals funded by the U.S. Department of Defense have recently proved that copper surfaces can reduce infections in the intensive care unit by more than 50 percent.

Using published estimates, about 500,000 Americans will contract an infection this year in the ICU. This will cost our hospitals an additional $3.5 billion in treatment, and about 40,000 people will not survive the ordeal. The clinical trial results suggest that installing copper surfaces could cut these figures in half.

"By implementing these surfaces, hospitals can see real, continuous savings year after year," Estelle said. "This is a passive way to prevent infection that doesn't depend on human behavior, such as hand-washing or hydrogen peroxide vapor machines. There is no need for maintenance beyond the normal surface cleaning procedures that are already in place."

Working for a small company that is on the leading edge of developing a new market has been rewarding and challenging, Estelle said. While his engineering courses didn't teach all the skills he's needed, the problem-solving techniques he learned at UA certainly have helped.

"I get involved in everything from supply chain development and marketing to clinical trials, regulatory approvals, Congressional advocacy, and more," Estelle said. "This is really a multidisciplinary job, and a lot of it is business-oriented. There's a lot of on-the-job networking, and interfacing with different professionals."

"But the most rewarding thing for me is the ability to work on a project that centers on technology that will save lives," he said. "I'm a pretty lucky guy."

Isaac Washed Up BP Oil and Tar

Since Isaac made landfall more than a week ago, the water the storm has receded and tar balls and oil have been reported on shores in Alabama and Louisiana, where officials closed a 13-mile stretch of beach Tuesday.

BP said Wednesday some of that oil was from the spill, but said some of the crude may be from other sources, too.

"If there's something good about this storm it made it visible where we can clean it up," BP spokesman Ray Melick said.

BP still has hundreds of cleanup workers on the Gulf Coast after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded, killing 11 workers and leading to the nation's largest offshore spill.

Melick said the company was working with the Coast Guard, state officials and land managers to clean up the oil on the Fourchon beach in Louisiana.

He said crews would be there today.

Isaac made landfall near Fourchon on Aug. 28 as a Category 1 storm, pummeling the coast with waves, wind and rain. Seven people were killed in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Ed Overton, a chemist and oil spill expert at Louisiana State University, said the exposed oil was weathered and less toxic, though it could still harm animals ? such as crabs, crawfish and bait fish.

He said the storm helped speed up natural processes that break down oil and it might take several more storms to stir up the rest of the oil buried along the coast.

"We don't like to say it, but hurricanes are Mother Nature's way of taking a bath," he said.

The reappearance of oil frustrated state officials.

Garret Graves, a top coastal aide to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, accused BP of not being aggressive enough with its initial cleanup.

"If they would put just a fraction of the dollars they're putting into their PR campaign into cleanup, we'd certainly be much farther ahead than we are now," he said.

BP has spent millions of dollars on its public relations campaign, but the company has not said exactly how much it has invested. Its cleanup and response costs over the last two years were more than $14 billion, the company has said.

DNA database unlocks map to genetic disease | Zero To Hero TV ...

CHICAGO ? A massive DNA database has generated a map of the genetic switches which impact everything from hair loss to cancer and opened the door to revolutionary treatments for a host of deadly diseases, researchers said Wednesday.

?This is a major step toward understanding the wiring diagram of a human being,? said lead researcher Michael Snyder of Stanford University.

The Encyclopedia of DNA Elements ? or ENCODE ? has enabled scientists to assign specific biological functions for 80 percent of the human genome and has helped explain how genetic variants affect a person?s susceptibility to disease.

It also exposed previously hidden connections between seemingly unrelated diseases such as asthma, lupus and multiple sclerosis which were found to be linked to specific genetic regulatory codes for proteins that regulate the immune system.

A key insight revealed in a host of papers published in the journals Nature, Science and Cell is that many diseases result from changes in when, where and how a gene switches on or off rather than a change to the gene itself.

?Genes occupy only a tiny fraction of the genome, and most efforts to map the genetic causes of disease were frustrated by signals that pointed away from genes,? said co-author John Stamatoyannoupoulos, a researcher at the University of Washington.

?Now we know that these efforts were not in vain, and that the signals were in fact pointing to the genome?s ?operating system.??

Another significant finding is that this blueprint of genetic switches can be used to pinpoint cell types that play a role in specific diseases without needing to understand how the disease actually works.

For instance, it took researchers decades to link a set of immune cells with the inflammatory bowel disease Crohn?s. The ENCODE data was able to swiftly identify that the genetic variants associated with Crohn?s were concentrated in that subset of cells.

This in-depth map of the human genetic code has also altered scientific understanding of how DNA works.

The first sketch of the human genome described DNA as a string which contained genes in isolated sections that make up just two percent of its length.

The space in between was dubbed ?junk DNA? and many researchers did not believe it served a function. Attention was focused on the ?coding? genes which carried instructions for making the proteins that carried out basic biological functions.

ENCODE confirmed more recent theories that the bulk of this ?junk? is actually littered with switches that determine how the genes work and act as a massive control panel.

?Our genome is simply alive with switches: millions of places that determine whether a gene is switched on or off,? said lead analysis coordinator Ewan Birney of the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute.

?We found a much bigger part of the genome ? a surprising amount, in fact ? is involved in controlling when and where proteins are produced, than in simply manufacturing the building blocks.?

Perhaps most importantly, the database has been made available to the scientific community ? and the general public ? as an open resource in order to facilitate research.

?ENCODE gives us a set of very valuable leads to follow to discover key mechanisms at play in health and disease,? said Ian Dunham of the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute, who played a key role in coordinating the analysis.

?Those can be exploited to create entirely new medicines, or to repurpose existing treatments.?

The project combined the efforts of 442 scientists in 32 labs in the United States, Britain, Spain, Switzerland, Singapore and Japan.

The researchers used about 300 years worth of computer time to study 147 tissue types and identified over four million different regulatory regions where proteins interact with the DNA.

Conservatives off TV in Michigan, Pennsylvania

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Conservatives have pulled advertising dollars out of Pennsylvania and Michigan and instead are focusing their money on less costly toss-up states.

Independent groups are spending nearly $13 million in the coming days to counter President Barack Obama's nominating convention in hopes of limiting any improvement he might see in polls.

But conservatives' hopes of expanding the playing field for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney are on hold for the moment, according to consultants who track spending on political ads.

"Over the last several weeks, the dynamics have been changing in a number of states that have led us to dedicate resources elsewhere," said Jonathan Collegio, a spokesman for American Crossroads, a super PAC advised by George W. Bush political guru Karl Rove.

While he said Pennsylvania remains highly competitive, Collegio said that "a statewide buy in Pennsylvania can cost more than buys in several other states combined."

American Crossroads on Wednesday announced it planned to spend $6.8 million over the next 10 days to air ads criticizing Obama's economic record. The group is running its ad in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia for the next 10 days.

Another conservative independent group, Americans for Prosperity, is spending $6.2 million on ads critical of Democrats' national health care overhaul. Founded by billionaire oil magnate brothers David and Charles Koch, the group is running ads in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin and North Carolina.

The group's ad, also released Wednesday, is the final piece of a $27 million effort in recent weeks to weaken Obama's re-election prospects.

But Pennsylvania, a state Obama won in 2008 with close to 55 percent of the vote, is not on the schedule for the latest advertising buys. Nor is Michigan, the state Obama won with 57 percent and which Romney's father led as governor ? and where Romney was born and raised.

Romney has not advertised in Pennsylvania since April. Obama's last advertising effort was in July.

Earlier this month, Americans for Prosperity and Restore Our Future super PAC, another group supporting Romney, aired ads in Pennsylvania. Obama's super PAC, Priorities USA Action, aired ads in Pennsylvania last month, too.
