A unique board game developed by a group of medical students at Western University will help bridge gaps between various health disciplines to better educate students about their roles in interdisciplinary health teams.

Students at Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry began developing the board game as part of a second year ethics project, and now it's been professionally reproduced for use in healthcare faculties at universities across Canada.

"We wanted to develop something creative that could be integrated into the curricula of all undergraduate and graduate healthcare programs, from audiology to personal support work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and all the way to the different medical specialties," said Sarit Khimdas, a fourth year medical student at Schulich.

Khimdas and his classmates, Akshay Shetty, Chandheeb Rajakumar, Colin Meyer-Macaulay, Cal Shapiro, Rachit Sheshgiri and Neeraj Patel, used a case-based approach to create a game that would provide a realistic look at how different allied health professionals approach various aspects of patient care. The game, called 'Circles of Care,' can be played by four to eight players and ideally would be played by a group of people each from different healthcare programs.

"It provides the opportunity to learn together by discussing what our individual roles are in the healthcare team," Khimdas said. The game is currently being translated into French, and digital applications for tablet devices are also being explored.

A paper on their work has been published in the Journal of Interprofessional Care.

New Jersey?Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg said the Republican ?men?s club? in the Senate wants women ?barefoot and pregnant,? speaking out against a GOP effort to give employers the option not to offer contraception coverage in health insurance plans.

?It?s time to tell the Republicans to mind their own business,? Lautenberg said on Capitol Hill Tuesday.

?Our side believes that women should be able to choose the paths in life that?s best for them and that?s why President Obama wants to make birth control more affordable. Contraception is basic health care, and it?s essential for individuals to choose when they want to have a career and when they want to start a family.?

California Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer joined Lautenberg in blasting a Republican amendment to the Senate transportation bill that would allow employers not to include birth control in?the health insurance plans they offer to their employees. In her remarks, Boxer mentioned an ?idea? she got from comedian Jon Stewart?s ?The Daily Show.?

??If I believe as an employer that laughter is the best medicine, I can just call my sick employees and tell them jokes or call in some comedians to tell them jokes,?? she said quoting the comedian.

Boxer added that the amendment, proposed by Missouri Republican Senator Roy Blunt, is ?dangerous to our people? and asked members on both sides of the aisle ?reject it.?

Lautenberg labeled the effort an ?attack by the men?s club? in the Senate who ?say they want to decide what?s best for women in this country.? Lautenberg also does not want ?some rough neck? putting ?his nose? in his daughter?s and granddaughter?s business.

?It has twenty sponsors and all but one of them is male.?

?Senator Blunt as we?ve heard here wants to give employers and big insurance companies the power to take away health services on moral grounds but who makes the decision on what?s moral? That?s the question,? he said.

The Catholic Church has publicly opposed a new directive stemming from the Obama health care law that would require religious institutions to provide health insurance plans to their employees that covers contraception.

President Obama and the Democratic congressional leadership support the mandate.

The United States Defence Department announced Tuesday that ?the military commission has charged Majid Shoukat Khan, a Pakistani national, for joining hands with the Al Qaeda [ Images ] 'to commit murder and attempted murder' and providing material support for terrorism, and spying.

The department announced that Khan, who lived in the US from 1996 to early 2002 before returning to Pakistan, joined with members of Al Qaeda in Pakistan to plan and prepare attacks against diverse targets in the US, Indonesia, and elsewhere after September 11, 2001 attacks.

The commission, the DoD said, has alleged that Khan obtained travel document to travel from his residence in Baltimore, Maryland to Karachi in January of 2002, and that he conspired with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed regarding a plot to blow-up underground gasoline storage tanks at gas stations in the US and in other domestic plots.

It said that Khan at Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's direction, recorded a 'martyr video,' donned an explosive vest, and sat in a mosque waiting for then Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf [ Images ] to arrive so that Khan could assassinate him. That plot never succeeded because Musharraf never arrived.

According to the charges Khan travelled in March of 2002 from Karachi to Baltimore, where 'he performed tasks for Al Qaeda and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, including purchasing a laptop computer for Al Qaeda and contacting a military recruiter to obtain materials regarding the US military, which he intended to give to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.'

On returning to Pakistan in August 2002, Khan worked directly for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Ali Abdul al-Aziz Ali, and other Al Qaeda associates, all of whom were evading capture by United States and Pakistani authorities.

While in Bangkok, he allegedly delivered $50,000 in Al Qaeda funds to a southeast Asia-based Qaeda affiliate, which in turn delivered the money to the allied terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah, which used the funding to detonate a bomb in August of 2003 at the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, killing 11 people, wounding at least 81 others, and severely damaging the hotel.

According to a DoD press note, chief prosecutor Mark Martins has forwarded the sworn charges to convening authority Bruce MacDonald with a recommendation that the charges be referred to military commission for trial.?

By separate action, Martins also detailed Courtney Sullivan of the Justice Department as trial counsel in the case and Army Lt Col ?Michael Hosang and Navy Lt Nathaniel Gross as assistant trial counsel.

Martins has not recommended that any of the charges be referred to a military commission empowered to adjudge the death penalty, and therefore the maximum allowable penalty for the charged offenses is life imprisonment.

The convening authority will make an independent determination as to whether to refer some, all, or none of the charges to trial by military commission.

Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov is to be inaugurated for a second term on Friday, less than a week after winning over 97 percent of the vote in elections, a source said.

"The grand ceremony for the inauguration of the elected president of Turkmenistan will take place on February 17," a government source told AFP Wednesday, asking not to be named.

Berdymukhamedov won 97.14 percent of the vote in Sunday's polls against seven rivals who were all loyal members of the elite and none of whom made the slightest effort to criticise his record.

His nearest competitor mustered barely over one percent of the vote.

The president in his first term embarked on cautious reforms to dismantle the bizarre legacy of his eccentric predecessor Saparmurat Niyazov who died in 2006.

But critics say his stabs at change, known as the "Era of Rebirth" in Turkmenistan, amounted to mere window dressing and accuse Berdymukhamedov of creating his own personality cult.

Turkmenistan has shrugged off Western scepticism over the polls, which were not monitored by any full-scale Western observer mission.

The official news agency Wednesday hailed the elections as "going down in history as the culmination of the era of great changes started five years ago," saying Turkmenistan had voted for its "leader-creator".

In comments published by the government mouthpiece newspaper Neutral Turkmenistan, Berdymukhamedov appeared to reject any pressure for faster change in the ex-Soviet state.

"We don't have the habit of hurrying and we will not artificially form and accelerate social-economic processes in society just for the sake of someone's interests," he wrote.

MILAN (AP) ? Italian prosecutors asked the country's highest criminal court on Tuesday to reinstate the murder convictions of American Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend in the brutal slaying of a British student.

Perugia prosecutors filed the 112-page appeal, more than four months after an appeals court threw out the convictions against Knox, 24, and Raffaele Sollecito, 27.

Prosecutors Giovanni Galati said he is "very convinced" that Sollecito and Knox are responsible for the Nov. 1, 2007, stabbing death of Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old British student who shared an apartment with Knox in the university town of Perugia.

Galati told reporters in Pergugia that the appeals sentence must be thrown out, saying it was full of "ommissions and many errors," the news agency ANSA reported.

The prosecutors appeal, which was expected, marks the third and final stage in the criminal case against Knox and Sollecito.

The two were found guilty in a lower court of slaying Kercher in what prosecutors described as a sex-fueled attack, and sentenced to 26 years and 25 years respectively. An appeals court then said the evidence did not hold up, freeing Knox to return home to the United States after serving four years in prison. Sollecito lives in Italy.

Luca Maori, Sollecito's lawyer, said the high court is expected to issue its decision toward the end of the year.

The prosecutors move was expected, and Maori said he would file his counter-arguments after going over the prosecutors' appeal.

"We will write our brief to say it's a mistake," Maori said.

The high court cannot hear new evidence, and will make its decision based on what has been submitted in earlier trials.

The fatal blow to the prosecution's case was a court-ordered DNA review in the appellate trial that discredited crucial genetic evidence used to convict Knox and Sollecito in 2009.

Kercher was found slain in a pool of blood in the house she shared with Knox in Perugia. The appeals court in October said the guilty verdicts against the pair were not corroborated by any evidence, and that the court hadn't proven they were in the house when Kercher was killed.

Still, the appellate panel stopped short of saying what might have happened the night of the murder.

A third defendant, Ivory Coast-born drifter Rudy Guede, was convicted in a separate trial of sexually assaulting and stabbing Kercher. His 16-year sentence, reduced in appeal from an initial 30 years, was upheld by Italy's highest court in 2010.

Do you believe that there is an alternative to hybrid cars when it comes to fuel-efficiency? Do you think that there?s a more fuel efficient vehicle you don?t know about yet? You would expect that with so many different cars available in the world, there will be one that is better than hybrid cars in terms of fuel economy. However, there doesn?t look to be one right now. Just about any car which may be more fuel-efficient than a hybrid cannot be unknown for very long.

Exactly how could a non-hybrid automobile be more gas efficient than a hybrid? You could expect to find a car that receives better fuel economy than a hybrid. Can small gas-powered cars be more fuel efficient compared to a hybrid? Would you expect electric cars to run better than some sort of hybrid? Given that they don?t run on gas, you can?t really do a comparison of them to hybrids. If there is a vehicle far better than a hybrid than what is it? Not one conventional car currently available can beat the fuel efficiency of a hybrid. That sort of car just isn?t going to exist anywhere in the world. There isn?t any reason why a dealership may wish to keep such a car a secret.

The EPA unveiled the most recent data on the world?s most fuel-efficient vehicles. All of the best fuel-efficient cars seem to be hybrids with the Toyota Prius at the top spot with a fuel economy of 50 mpg. The next two vehicles are Honda?s Insight at 41 mpg along with the Civic Hybrid also at 41 mpg. No gas-powered vehicle measures up to any of these hybrid cars. Nobody has learned if car designers are working on something different so your only real option is a hybrid.

The only option you have for those who simply want the best would be the Toyota Prius. In the event the Prius perhaps is out of your range, you may want to consider the other hybrids. The Honda Hybrids are actually excellent options if you are searching for a hybrid on a budget. In the event you favor a special brand of car, you probably want to consider the Toyota Prius. One issue that may keep you from buying the car is the look.

On a yearly basis, car companies want to enhance the fuel efficiency of their vehicles but none match up with a hybrid. You?ll be finding more plug-in hybrid cars, battery-powered electric cars and more cars with fuel-efficient engine systems. However, buying a hybrid at this time is not a bad choice at all.
