The first part of the History network's miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys" was seen by 13.9 million viewers on Monday night, more than 17 million when the immediate repeat was added in, the Nielsen company said. The numbers held up for part two on Tuesday, which was watched by 13.1 million, Nielsen said.

Those are huge numbers in the cable television world. No scripted series on the broadcast networks last week came close. By contrast, Fox's series finale of "House" last week reached 8.7 million people.

"Hatfields & McCoys" had a couple of big-name stars in Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton and is airing over three nights in two-hour chunks. Broadcast television was dominated by competition shows again last week, led by the 21.5 million people who watched the "American Idol" finale on Fox. "Dancing With the Stars" and "America's Got Talent" also did well.

Perhaps crowded by the marketplace, ABC's "Duets" finished a modest No. 23 in the ratings, with 6.8 million viewers. Fox's summer series "So You Think You Can Dance" also came out of the gate slowly, with 6.3 million viewers.

Led by "Idol," Fox won the week with an average of 8.3 million viewers in prime time (4.9 rating, 9 share). ABC had 7.4 million (also 4.9, 9), CBS had 5.8 million (3.9, 7), NBC had 4.6 million (3.0, 5), ION Television had 1.1 million (0.7, 1) and the CW had 680,000 (0.5, 1). Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with 3.7 million (2.0, 3), Telemundo had 1.1 million (0.6, 1), TeleFutura had 510,000 (0.3, 0), Estrella had 210,000 and Azteca 110,000 (both 0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 7.8 million viewers (5.3, 11). ABC's "World News" was second with 7.2 million (4.9, 10) and the "CBS Evening News" had 5.4 million viewers (3.8, 8).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of May 21-27, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "American Idol" (Wednesday), Fox, 21.49 million; "Dancing With the Stars Results," ABC, 17.75 million; "Dancing With the Stars," ABC, 16.84 million; "American Idol" (Tuesday), Fox, 14.85 million; "Modern Family," ABC, 10.07 million; "America's Got Talent" (Monday), NBC, 9.66 million; "America's Got Talent" (Tuesday), NBC, 9.44 million; "NCIS" (Tuesday, 10 p.m.), CBS, 9.34 million; "NCIS" (Tuesday, 9 p.m.), CBS, 9.17 million; "Dancing With the Stars" (Tuesday, 8 p.m.), ABC, 8.84 million.

Pinterest Users Buy More Items Than Facebook Users, According to ...

When it comes to online social shopping, Pinterest users are far more likely to purchase items they see posted on the site compared to the purchasing behavior of Facebook users viewing items they?ve seen on the news feed or a friend?s wall, according to a new survey released today from SteelHouse, a behavioral commerce company powering the industry?s only zero reaction time marketing solution.

Respondents were asked if Facebook or Pinterest play a role in their online shopping experiences, and nearly all respondents said yes. The survey findings revealed that Pinterest users are 79 percent more likely to purchase items they saw pinned on Pinterest versus Facebook users. Thirty-three percent of Facebook users said they have purchased a product or service they?ve seen in a Facebook ad, on the news feed, or on a friend?s wall, in comparison to the 59 percent of Pinterest users who have made a purchase based on an item they saw on Pinterest.

However, Facebook remains consumers? top choice for getting ideas on what products and/or services to purchase and is also the preferred choice for social product sharing. More than one half of those surveyed said they regularly share their online purchases. Fifty-five percent of shoppers prefer to share their purchases on Facebook, followed by Twitter (22%), Pinterest (14%), and Instagram (5%). LinkedIn bottomed the list with only 3% of respondents using it to socially share purchases.

When asked about mobile shopping, 43 percent of those surveyed said they have downloaded a retailer?s mobile app and primarily use the app to browse for items (32%), make purchases (22%), and earn discounts and deals (26%). When making purchases though, close to one third of respondents said they prefer to make purchases from a retailer?s online store versus the retailer?s mobile app.

In addition to getting more social and mobile with shopping, 98 percent of shoppers say that online customer reviews have a major influence on their decision to purchase a product or service. Seventy-two percent of consumers shared they always read reviews before making a purchase, while 26 percent of consumers only sometimes read reviews before purchasing. When reading product reviews, 83 percent of shoppers take both, the star rating and written comments, into consideration. Star ratings are particularly important as half of all respondents said the lowest star rating they?d accept when making a purchase is three stars on a five star scale.

Beyond just checking out reviews, many respondents said they also write reviews. Sixty-eight percent of shoppers say they rate and review products on a regular basis. The top product categories they write reviews on are electronics (23%), DVDs/CDs/MP3s (14%), books, and clothing (both 13%).

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Dan Wheldon couldn't win his third Indianapolis 500. Dario Franchitti did it for him.

And if it wasn't going to be Franchitti, then it would be Scott Dixon. Maybe even Tony Kanaan.

No matter what, one of Wheldon's best buddies was going to Victory Lane.

In the end, they celebrated a 1-2-3 sweep that honored D-Dub, their missing friend.

Franchitti stamped his name in the record books by winning his third Indy 500 on Sunday, a day that started and ended as a tribute to Wheldon, who won the race a year ago but was killed in an October crash in the IndyCar season finale. As his three friends lined up with six laps remaining for the final restart ? Kanaan out front, Chip Ganassi teammates Franchitti and Dixon second and third ? they couldn't help but wonder if Wheldon was at play.

"Kind of like old times, the three of us back and forwards," Franchitti said. "I thought, 'Dan is laughing at us right now going at it.'"

It was an absolutely fitting finish, even if the elation for Franchitti's win was tempered by the heartbreak for two other deserving drivers. Dixon, a one-time Indy 500 winner, temporarily relocated his family to St. Petersburg, Fla., to support Wheldon's wife and two sons, and Kanaan, 0 for 11 now at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, had openly wept following the death of his former teammate.

"I think a lot of us that were close to Dan, you know, you wanted it that little bit more," Dixon said. "I guess maybe in the back of your mind, you figured he would probably help you out today, too. I think in that situation, seeing how it lined up with the top three, three of Dan's friends, it was a tough one."

Franchitti won a wheel-to-wheel, last-lap battle, sailing away to the checkered flag when Takuma Sato spun out trying to make one last pass on the inside and slammed into the wall.

The race had shaped into what was expected to be a duel to the finish between Franchitti and Dixon. But when the Scot made his final pass of Dixon with two laps to go, he pulled Sato with him and it sapped Dixon's momentum.

So the last-lap pass attempt was Sato's for the taking, and he couldn't pull it off as he hugged the inside white line through Turn 1. His wheels appeared to touch Franchitti's, he spun hard into the wall, and Franchitti sailed past for the win ? this one, just like the first two, under caution.

Dixon crossed the finish line in second, and Kanaan was third.

"Everybody up there was a friend of Dan's, and that about sums it up. Everybody loved him," Franchitti said as bagpipes played over the public address system.

"What a race! What a race!" Franchitti said. "I think D-Dub would be proud of that one."

Dixon met his teammate in Victory Lane, and Franchitti was reminded of the delicate balance in celebrating a team win vs. beating a teammate.

"I want to beat Scott. I know he wants to beat me. I don't think I've met maybe a more competitive individual, except maybe Dan in the early years," Franchitti said. "He's my buddy. Out on the track, he's competition, but a teammate, and then afterward he's my friend. I see the disappointment in his face. I see the disappointment in T.K.'s face.

"I think both those guys will get more championships and Indy wins. They're just too good not to. When you beat guys like that, I take that as a big accomplishment because, God, they're not easy to beat."

Kanaan, who used a bold move on a late restart to dart from fifth to first, couldn't hold off Franchitti and Dixon on the last restart. He was OK with the final result.

"I don't think it could have been a better result for Dan," Kanaan said. "Wherever he is right now, he's definitely making fun of Sato, I can tell you that, and he's giving Dario a tap on the back for sure, and he was going to call me a wanker that I didn't win this thing.

"I'm glad this is over. I'm glad that now I hope we can all move on and just remember Dan the way Dan was ? a happy guy, a wonderful friend."

Wheldon's wife, Susie, went to Victory Lane to congratulate Franchitti, who hid his tears of joy behind a pair of white sunglasses worn in tribute because they were Wheldon's preference. She then sat next to Franchitti's wife, actress Ashley Judd, in the backseat of the convertible ? the same seat she had a year ago for Wheldon's win ? for the victory lap around the 2.5-mile oval.

The day opened with car owner Bryan Herta driving a single parade lap around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the car Wheldon drove to victory last year. Fans were given white sunglasses to wear on laps 26 and 98, marking the car numbers Wheldon used in his two wins.

It was Susie Wheldon's first trip to any race track since her husband's death, and she watched from Dixon's pit stand with his wife, Emma.

So it was apt on this hot day ? the temperature hit 91 degrees, just one shy of the Indy 500 record from 1937 ? that one of the most competitive races in history ended with a frantic push from Wheldon's friends. Ten drivers swapped the lead 35 times, shattering the record of 29 in the 1960 race won by Jim Rathmann.

Until the last lap, when Sato made his move for the win, the race was close but uneventful.

The only multi-car accident came when a spin by Mike Conway collected Will Power, who came to Indy as the series points leader and winner of the last three races this season. It was a somewhat frightening accident as Conway, who broke his front wing when he hit one of his crew members on pit road, hit the outside wall and his car tilted on its side before coming to rest. And Helio Castroneves had to deftly maneuver past a bouncing tire that still grazed one of his own wheels.

Besides that, though, the race was slowed by just seven other cautions ? including the one on the last lap ? for 39 of the 200 laps.

Marco Andretti, who went into Sunday believing the race "is mine to lose," was strong at the start, but a series of adjustments were not to his liking and he unraveled on his team radio before spinning to bring out the final caution with 13 laps remaining.

Franchitti and Dixon battled back and forth in the final third of the race, with Sato consistently in the mix. Then came Kanaan, from nowhere it seemed, but he was unable to hang on to the lead on the restart after Andretti's crash brought out the yellow with 13 laps to go.

Andretti said the wreck "definitely rang my bell."

Everyone thought the race would go to a Chevrolet driver for either Andretti Autosport or Penske Racing, which won the first four races of the season and swept the front two rows in qualifying. But in the end, it was three Hondas fighting for their first win of the season.

After the last restart, Franchitti pulled past Dixon for the final time, then went for the lead, pulling even with Franchitti. "Job done," he said he thought, but he went in too low and the tires appeared to touch.

"It looks like he didn't give me enough room to go there," Sato said. "I was a little below the white line. I had nowhere to go."

Sato said the cars never actually hit but the white line marking the inside of the track "was less than touching my own car ? so, you know, I mean almost on the grass."

Franchitti coasted across the line under a yellow caution flag to become the 10th driver to win at least three Indy 500s.

This was the second year in a row that a crash on the final lap affected the outcome. In 2011, rookie JR Hildebrand was leading going into the final turn when his car slammed into the wall, allowing Wheldon to cruise past and take the checkered flag.

"I was side by side with Takuma," Franchitti said. "We hit and I managed to keep it out of trouble."

The victory snaps a disappointing start to the season for Franchitti, who has won the last three championships but seemed stumped by IndyCar's new car through the first four races. In breaking out Sunday for his 31st victory, he's now in a tie with Sebastien Bourdais and Paul Tracy on the all-time wins list.

One more win will move Franchitti into seventh place in the record books. The only drivers ahead of him? The giants of open-wheel racing: three Unsers, two Andrettis and A.J. Foyt, the all-time wins leader.

UMD's Williams Qualifies for NCAA Finals

Pueblo, CO (Northland's NewsCenter) --- UMD senior runner Lexi Williams qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run on Friday night, finishing eighth in her heat at the Division II NCAA outdoor track and field championships.

Williams ran the race in 2 minutes, 10.72 seconds to put her through to Saturday's championship race, with that scheduled to be run at 5:55 p.m. CST.

The Rice Lake native is making her first-ever appearance the NCAA championships, and she is one of only two UMD runners to qualify this year for the national meet.

He was detained by police in early 2001 after offering to help striking workers at the Dazhou Steel Mill in Sichuan. Around 1,000 workers at the plant had earlier organised a mass protest demanding the payment of overdue wages.

Hu was initially charged with ?incitement to subvert state power? but the charges were subsequently increased to ?subversion.? Hu was sentenced to 11 years? imprisonment by the Dazhou Intermediate People?s Court in May 2002.

Hu?s mother told Human Rights in China that after his detention, the family heard nothing from the authorities until months after his trial. She said, ?We did not know that he had been sentenced to 11 years until August or September 2002, when the police brought the verdict to his father in a hospital room to get his signature. Military-style charter school moving to Goshen

SPRINGFIELD ? Goshen School, closed last year by a district facing severe financial constraints, will open to students again next fall.

The Springfield School Board voted this week to accept the Willamette Leadership Academy as a district charter school, citing its 10-year history, sound finances and success with educating otherwise struggling students.

The middle and high school academy is located southeast of Veneta and is under contract with the Fern Ridge School District. It serves almost 180 students.

Oregon?s charter school laws require such schools to affiliate with sponsoring districts, which receive a small percentage of state school funding for overseeing some aspects of charter school operations.

The Springfield board, which had earlier this year denied a charter school request from parents dismayed by the closure of Mohawk Valley Elementary School, was more enthusiastic about the long-established academy, which has a track record of educating students who are struggling in more traditional school settings.

The school?s financial house was also in order, with cash assets of $390,000, according to a Springfield review of the academy?s books.

Willamette uses a military model in educating its students, who wear uniforms, do military formation drills and who have a teacher and an aide in the classroom whose job is to maintain order.

During public hearings earlier this year, the Springfield board heard from several academy students who described in glowing terms how the more disciplined atmosphere at the school helped them build their self-esteem as well as their grade point averages.

The academy is housed in a former elementary school that it has outgrown, academy board Chairwoman Sandra Blain said. Moving to Goshen will allow the school to accept more students. It has a waiting list of 114, she said.

Going to Goshen will let the academy add 74 students and increase its employee count to about 36, from 30, Blain said.

The move will also allow the charter school to expand hands-on learning opportunities such as construction, small-engine repair and early childhood development classes. Goshen?s proximity to Lane Community College will make it easier for some students also to take LCC courses, she said.

The new location makes the school more accessible to its students living in Cottage Grove and Creswell, Blain said.

The school is in Goshen, at the community?s Interstate 5 interchange.

Almost 60 academy students live in Springfield.

In coming weeks, the academy and the district will hammer out the details of the new charter contract, which will then go to the state Department of Education for approval.

Blain said the academy has 180 days left in its charter contract with the Fern Ridge district, which will require the academy to pay rent on the building the school occupies.

No date has been set for moving to Goshen, she said.

Neither the district nor the academy would go into detail about their financial arrangements, which have yet to be hammered out, but at Thursday?s board meeting Springfield?s director of secondary instruction, Matt Coleman, noted that the academy may be in a position to buy the building.

At that same meeting, the Springfield board declared the Goshen School surplus property to be sold. It also named a real estate agent to do the deal.

The board hired Cushman & Wakefield of Oregon. Cushman & Wakefield is a global real estate firm with offices in Portland. Board members said the firm was chosen for its expertise in public buildings.

The county has pegged the property?s market value at $3 million.

The Goshen School, constructed in 1949, sits on an 8.32-acre site on B Street in Goshen. In 2003, fire destroyed the school gym and cafeteria, but they have since been rebuilt and are in beautiful condition, Blain said.

?The school is in quite good shape,? she said.

Among the first things the academy plans to do is reach out to people living in the Goshen area to introduce people to the school, Blain said.

The students have a record of volunteerism, from offering color guards at events to cleanup work after windstorms and floods, Blain said.

?We want to make ourselves acquainted and let people know we do community service,? she said.

George Halvorson: Celebrating Being in a Diversity League of Our Own

The following post is being republished from a weekly Letter to the Employees of Kaiser Permanente.

Dear KP Colleagues,

One of our great strengths at Kaiser Permanente is our diversity.

We have a wonderful level of diversity among our caregivers and staff, and we have a wonderful level of diversity among our patients and members.

Our Board is diverse, our leadership is diverse, and our total array of caregivers is diverse enough that we don't have a majority group at Kaiser Permanente that makes up over half of our staff.

With the most diverse staff of any major health care organization, we perform at very high levels.

Medicare used 53 criteria to rate 459 health plans last year and gave their top plans five stars. Only nine health plans in the entire country were rated at five stars. Five of our regions rated the top level of five stars, and our lowest score in the other three regions was 4.5 stars.

We were also awarded the J.D. Power and Associates number one ranking for member satisfaction in our five largest Regions -- and we have more than 20 HEDIS quality scores where the best score in the country is Kaiser Permanente.

So we are performing at high levels, and we are delivering care as teams in ways that save lives and set standards for others in health care.

My own strong opinion is that our diversity gives us the sensitivity and the connectivity that we need to serve our members respectfully and well.

Our commitment to our members and our patients, and our commitment to function in teams gives us performance levels that are what our members deserve because they entrust us with their care. That is a sacred trust, and one we appreciate.

So we do well when outside organizations rate us on quality and care. We also do well when outside organizations rate us relative to our diversity.

How well have we done?

We were rated number one in the country last year by DiversityInc's Top 50 Companies for Diversity as a best employer for diversity.

ComputerWorld magazine rated us the best place to work in the country for diverse IT employees. The people who give out the Catalyst Award as the best place to work for women gave us their first place award last year.

We have been recognized by the Hispanic College Fund as Company of the Year, and the National Hispanic Corporate Council will be honoring us at their annual meeting this year.

For the last two years, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) advocacy group in the United States, recognized Kaiser Permanente for our fully inclusive, non-discrimination policy. We were named the first health and hospital system in the U.S. to earn a perfect rating, 100 percent, on the HRC's Health Equality Index. That means we were ranked the best health care system for LGBT.

Last year, Kaiser Permanente received a 90 percent rating on the HRC's annual Corporate Equality Index (Best place to work, for LGBT) for creating policies on diversity and inclusion, and providing training and benefits to create a fair and equal workplace.

One of my favorite awards comes from the Diversity MBA Magazine.

They rated us best employer in the country for diverse MBAs three years ago. Then they rated us again as number one as best employer in the country two years ago.

Last year, they rated us number one again.

It is a lovely thing for us to win first place three times in a row. That's good for us. But in an interesting way, it isn't quite as good for Diversity MBA Magazine to have the same winner year after year.

They throw a great banquet in Chicago every year for the winner.

They have a wide range of supportive organizations and diversity champions from across the country at the banquet. As the winner for the year, we are heavily featured at that dinner. We get to tell our story.

The attendees at the dinner were delighted and informed to hear our story the first year we won. They were reinforced and pleased to hear our story again the second year we won. They were -- to be frank -- slightly less excited to hear our story again for year three -- even though we sent in a new team of very good presenters.

The winner each year goes on the cover of the magazine. Putting us on the cover three straight years probably didn't increase subscriptions.

Clearly, Diversity MBA Magazine had a problem.

So what did they do?

They came up with a lovely solution. They put us in a league of our own. They invented a new category of winner -- Lifetime Achievement Hall of Fame Winner -- and they made us the first organization to go into the Diversity MBA Magazine Hall of Fame. Three-time winners go into the Hall of Fame.

It's not unlike what happens in Europe for the winner of the Champions League each year in soccer. The winner of the Champions League each year gets promoted to the Premier League. That winning team then plays in the higher league the following year.

Diversity MBA Magazine promoted us to the Diversity Premier League, and they put us in the Hall of Fame. They still gave us a very nice recognition at the annual dinner, but they now get to name someone else as the annual winner, and the audience of the dinner now gets to hear how another organization champions diversity.

So that's what I am celebrating this week. I am celebrating being -- for this one area of our performance -- in a league of our own. Very cool.

Diversity is one of our greatest strengths and assets. We are far from perfect, and we will never get all of the issues right -- but we are moving in some very good directions, and it is good to see those directions recognized.

Egyptians vote in presidential election's 2nd day

CAIRO (AP) ? Choosing their president freely for the first time, Egyptians are voting on the second day of an election that will produce a successor to longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak.

There were lines outside some polling centers on Thursday, but the morning turnout was generally weaker than the previous day's, when voters lined up outside polling centers before they opened.

Thirteen candidates are contesting the election, including Islamists, liberals and figures from Mubarak's ousted regime. Since none is likely to win outright in this first round on Wednesday and Thursday, the top two finishers will enter a run-off June 16-17. A winner will be announced June 21.

The generals who took control after Mubarak have promised to hand over power by July 1.

CAIRO (AP) ? After a lifetime of being told who will rule them, Egyptians dove enthusiastically into the uncertainty of the Arab world's first competitive presidential race Wednesday, wrestling with a polarizing choice between secularists rooted in Hosni Mubarak's old autocracy and Islamists hoping to infuse the state with religion.

Waiting in long lines, voters were palpably excited at the chance to decide their country's path in the vote, the fruit of last year's stunning popular revolt that overthew Mubarak after 29 years in power. For the past 60 years, Egypt's presidents ran unchallenged in yes-or-no referendums that few bothered to vote in.

Still, the choices raised worries among many about whether real democracy will emerge. The final result, likely to come after a runoff next month, will only open a new chapter of political struggle.

Mohammed Salah, 26, emerged grinning from a poll station, fresh from casting his ballot. "Before, they used to take care of that for me," he said. "Today, I am choosing for myself."

Medhat Ibrahim, 58, who suffers from cancer, had tears in his eyes. "I might die in a matter of months, so I came for my children, so they can live," he said, as he waited to vote in a poor Cairo district. "We want to live better, like human beings." He later came out flashing a finger stained with the blue ink used to prevent multiple voting. "Mubarak's policies gave me cancer," he said, referring to the decline in health care under the last regime. "Now I got my revenge."

Adding to the drama, this election is up in the air. The reliability of polls is uncertain, and four of the 13 candidates have bounced around the top spots, leaving no clear front-runner. None is likely to win outright in Wednesday and Thursday's balloting, so the top two vote-getters enter a run-off June 16-17, with the victor announced June 21.

The two secular front-runners are both veterans of Mubarak's regime ? former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq and former foreign minister Amr Moussa.

The main Islamist contenders are Mohammed Morsi of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood and Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, a moderate Islamist whose inclusive platform has won him the support of some liberals, leftists and minority Christians.

The debate went right up to the doorsteps of schools around the country where poll stations were set up.

Some voters backed Mubarak-era veterans, believing they can bring stability after months of rising crime, a crumbling economy and bloody riots. Others were horrified by the thought, believing the "feloul" ? or "remnants" of the regime ? will keep Egypt locked in dictatorship and thwart democracy.

Islamists, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood, saw their chance to lead a country where they were repressed for decades and to implement their version of Islamic law. Their critics recoiled, fearing theocracy.

Some saw an alternative to both in a leftist candidate, Hamdeen Sabahi, who has claimed the mantle of Egypt's first president, the populist Gamal Abdel-Nasser.

An Islamist victory, particularly by Morsi, will likely mean a greater emphasis on religion in government. His Muslim Brotherhood, which already dominates parliament, says it won't mimic Saudi Arabia and force women to wear veils or implement harsh punishments like amputations. But it says it does want to implement a more moderate version of Islamic law, which liberals fear will mean limitations on many rights.

Many of the candidates have called for amendments to Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel, which remains deeply unpopular. None is likely to dump it, but a victory by any of the Islamist or leftist candidates in the race could mean strained ties with Israel and a stronger stance in support of the Palestinians in the peace process.

The candidates from the Mubarak regime ? and, ironically, the Brotherhood, which has already held multiple talks with U.S. officials ? are most likely to maintain the alliance with the United States.

A looming question is whether either side will accept victory by the other. Islamists have warned of new protests if Shafiq wins, which they say can only happen by fraud. Many are convinced the ruling military wants a victory by Shafiq, a former air force commander.

"Over my dead body will Shafiq or Moussa win. Why not just bring back Mubarak?" said Saleh Zeinhom, a merchant backing Abolfotoh. "I'm certain we'll have a bloodbath after the elections because the military council won't hand power to anyone but Shafiq."

Shafiq was met by several dozen protesters screaming "down with the feloul" as he arrived to vote in an upscale neighborhood east of Cairo. Some protesters showed their contempt by holding up their shoes in his direction. On his way out, some mobbed him, swinging their shoes at him as his security hustled him into his car.

Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister until he too was forced out of his post by protests, has been openly disparaging of the pro-democracy youth groups who led the anti-Mubarak uprising. Critics view him as too close to the generals who took over from Mubarak and whose own reputation is tainted by human rights abuses and authoritarian tendencies.

But with his strongman image, he has appealed to Egyptians who crave stability and fear Islamists.

"The country is going under. We need a president that implements justice and brings back security. Bottom line," said Essam el-Khatib, a government employee voting in the Cairo suburb of Maadi.

Nearby another man, Sayed Attiya, shouted, "What Shafiq? We didn't have a revolution to bring back Shafiq!"

The Muslim Brotherhood, meanwhile, faced a backlash of its own.

The group was the biggest winner in parliament elections late last year, winning nearly half the seats. But it disillusioned some by seeming too power hungry, demanding to be allowed to form a government and trying to dominate a panel created to draft a new constitution. The panel was scrapped and the process of writing the vital new charter is on hold as politicians struggle over forming a new one.

The image it has cultivated as an advocate of tolerance and piety was damaged by its campaign to discredit Abolfotoh, who quit the Brotherhood to run for president, and its edict that it is a sin to vote for anyone not advocating implementation of Islamic Shariah law.

At a polling station in the village of Ikhsas, outside Cairo, a group of neighbors got into a friendly but frank debate.

"I voted Brotherhood for parliament but I find they are inflexible in their opinions and want to take everything. I can't now find them in the country's top job," Bassem Saber, a 31-year-old accountant dressed in the traditional local robes, told the circle of men. He now backs Abolfotoh.

Khaled el-Zeini, a Brotherhood backer, said people were being unfair.

Fares Kamel, a local trader, interjected with a shout against the Brothers, "We loved them and wanted them but we realized they are all about monopolizing power."

But the group has a powerful electoral machine.

In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, Brotherhood vans ferried women supporters to the polls in the poor neighborhood of Abu Suleiman, one of the group's strongholds. The women, in headscarves or covered head to toe in black robes and veils that hid their faces, filed into the station.

"I want to give the Brotherhood a chance to rule," said Aida Ibrahim, a veteran Brotherhood member who was helping voters find their station. "If it doesn't work, they will be held accountable," she said.

Some Brotherhood supporters cited the group's years of providing charity to the poor ? including reduced-price meat, and free medical care.

"Whoever fills the tummy gets the vote," said Naima Badawi, a housewife sitting on her doorstep watching voters in Abu Sir, one of the many farming villages near the Pyramids being sucked into Cairo's urban sprawl.

There were only a few reports of overt violations of election rules Wednesday, mainly concerning candidates' backers campaigning near polling stations. Three international monitoring organizations, including the U.S.'s Carter Center, were observing the vote. Former President Jimmy Carter, the center's head, visited a polling station in the ancient Cairo district of Sayeda Aisha.

The election's winner will face a monumental task. The economy has been sliding as the key tourism industry dried up ? though it is starting to inch back up. Crime has increased. Labor strikes have proliferated.

And the political turmoil is far from over. The generals who took over from Mubarak have promised to hand authority to the election winner by the end of June. But many fear it will try to maintain a considerable amount of political say. The fundamentals of Mubarak's police state remain in place, including the powerful security forces.

"We will have an elected president, but the military is still here and the old regime is not dismantled," said Ahmed Maher, a prominent activist from the group April 6, a key architect of last year's 18-day uprising against Mubarak.

"The pressure will continue," he said. "People have finally woken up. Whoever the next president is, we won't leave him alone."
